Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB)

NIHB PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program is a national program that provides coverage to registered First Nations and recognized Inuit for a specified range of medically necessary items and services that are not covered through other; social programs, private insurance plans and provincial or territorial health insurance. 

TO BE ELIGABLE FOR NIHB BENEFITS YOU NEED TO BE A.

  • A registered First Nations according to the Indian Act 
  • An Infant that is under the age of 24 months (extended from 18 months, previously) if they have a parent or guardian who is NIHB eligible
  • An Inuit recognized by an Inuit land claim organization as outlined here:

(NIHB) PROGRAM 6 BENEFITS ARE:

  

1. Pharmacy & Drug and select over the counter (OTC) medications

2. Dental 

3. Vision

4. Medical Supplies and Equipment

5. Mental Health Counselling

6. Medical Transportation 

HEALTH POLICY LIAISON BACKGROUND

  

The Health Policy Liaison assists with accessing health services to registered First Nations from Bearspaw, Goodstoney, Chiniki, and Tsuut’ina members who are experiencing difficulties with the Non-Insured Health Benefits and other related provincial/territorial programs and services.

  • Serve as first point of contact for communities, organizations, and individuals for the purpose of facilitating access to the NIHB program and provide support for NIHB denials and appeals.
  • Collaborate with NIHB Regional Office (FNIHB) on programs, projects and initiatives that would improve awareness and access to the NIHB Program and better integration of health services.
  • Develop a communication strategy and implement approaches to improve awareness and of the NIHB Program.
  • Promote an understanding of the Navigators role and responsibilities to the Ontario First Nations communities, health care providers and agencies.
  • Liaison with First Nations and Inuit’s, Federal/Provincial and territorial health services, professional organizations, and health care providers in order to assist eligible clients to navigate the NIHB Program on related benefits access.

HOW CAN WE HELP

We provide support and advocacy to help registered members to access NIHB program. We will advocate with the Federal Government and health professionals on behalf of the First Nations community members to resolve NIHB issues and offer support through planning and research by assisting in interpreting policies and improving awareness to accessing benefits.
